Thomas E. Jewett letter, 1863 June 18-25.

Writing to his parents over a period of five days from the hospital at Baton Rouge, La., Jewett gives his opinion and the opinion of the other soldiers about Banks's abilities, strategy, and efforts to capture Port Hudson; the political and economic motives of Banks and Gen. Benjamin Butler; and the futility and certain death to come from assaults on the Confederate fortifications. Jewett also describes his health and the physical condition of his unit and the horrors of war. He gives news of other soldiers from Salem and inquires about family and friends and prospects for returning to work after the war.

Thomas E. Jewett, a native of Salem, Mass. and a machinist by trade, enlisted Sept. 1, 1862, and was mustered in as a sergeant in Company E of the 48th Massachusetts on Sept. 19. The 48th Mass. participated in General Nathaniel Banks's Louisiana Expedition, the focus of which was the capture of Port Hudson. Jewett was wounded in the campaign for Port Hudson on May 26, 1863, and sent to Baton Rouge to convalesce. The 48th Mass. was mustered out Sept. 3, 1863. From the description of T...
